  • Jim Carey-

    Biography

    Early life

Carrey was born in the town of Newmarket, Ontario to Percy and Kathleen Carrey; he has three older siblings, John, Patricia and Rita. His family is Catholic and had distant French Canadian roots (the original surname was Carré).[1] A comedian in name only from an early age, Carrey mailed his résumé to The Carol Burnett Show when he was 10 years old. The teachers in Carrey's high school gave him a few minutes at the end of each school day to do a stand-up comedy routine for his classmates.

Carrey's parents fell on hard times and were forced to move to the Toronto suburb of Scarborough, where they took security and janitorial jobs in the Titan Wheels factory at 1051 Tapscott Rd (now IPSCO Ontario Inc). The Carrey's lived in a historical house located on site. Carrey attended Blessed Trinity Catholic School in North York for two years, then began at Agincourt Collegiate Institute, Scarborough's oldest high school. For a time the family was in such financial straits that they lived in their Volkswagen van on a relative's lawn. In order to help out, Carrey began working eight-hour shifts each day after school.

    Start in comedy

Carrey dropped out of high school at the age of sixteen and began to work in comedy clubs with an act that included impersonations of celebrities such as Michael Landon and Jimmy Stewart. In 1979, at the age of 17, he moved to Los Angeles and started working in The Comedy Store, where he was noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield liked Carrey's act so much that he signed Carrey up to open Dangerfield's tour performances.

Carrey turned his attention towards filmed entertainment. He auditioned to be a castmember for NBC's Saturday Night Live when the show was looking for new cast members for their 1980-1981 season. Carrey was never chosen to be a cast member (although he finally hosted the show in May 1996). His first lead role on television was Skip Tarkenton, a young animation producer on NBC's The Duck Factory. The short-lived comedy, which aired from April 12, 1984 to July 11, 1984, offered a behind-the-scenes look at the crew that produced a children's cartoon.[2]

Carrey continued performing in small character roles in film and television, which eventually led to a friendship with fellow comedian Damon Wayans. The two co-starred as aliens in 1989's Earth Girls are Easy. When Wayans' brother Keenen were putting together a sketch comedy show for Fox called In Living Color, Carrey was hired as a token cast member. His unusual characters, including mannish female bodybuilder Vera de Milo and the masochistic safety inspector Fire Marshall Bill Burns (whose dangerous, ill-advised "safety tips" were the target of censors and television watchdog groups who saw Carrey's performance as Fire Marshall Bill as something that younger viewers would see as harmless fun and try to imitate), as well his on-screen behavior amazingly caught America's (and Hollywood's) attention.

    Film career

Carrey made his film debut in the short film Rubberface (1981). Four years later, he had a starring role in the dark comedy Once Bitten as Mark Kendall, a teen virgin who is pursued by a 400-year old vampire (Lauren Hutton). Carrey did not experience box office success until almost a decade later when he was cast in the starring role in the comedy Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, which premiered only months before In Living Color ended. The film was panned by critics, and helped earn him a 1994 Golden Raspberry Award nomination as Worst New Star. However, the film was a huge commercial success, as were Carrey's two other starring roles, in The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, both released the same year.

In 1995, Carrey appeared as the Riddler in Batman Forever and reprised his role as Ace Ventura in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Both films were successful at the box office and earned Carrey multi-million-dollar paychecks.

Carrey made headlines when it was revealed that he was paid twenty million dollars for his next film, The Cable Guy (directed by Ben Stiller), a record sum for a comedy actor. The attention drawn to his salary, coupled with negative reviews for the film and its character's dark mood in contrast to his other performances, all contributed to the film's box office failure. Carrey quickly rebounded with the successful and family-friendly Liar Liar, a return to his trademark comedy style.

Despite the regular comedy successes, Carrey took a chance and a slight paycut to star in The Truman Show (1998), a change of pace that led to forecasts of an Academy Award nomination. Although the movie was nominated for three other awards, Carrey did not personally receive a nomination, leading him to joke that "it's an honor just to be nominated ... oh no", during his appearance on the Oscar telecast. However, Carrey did win a Golden Globe (Best Actor in a Drama) and an MTV Movie Award (Best Male Performance). The same year, Carrey appeared as a fictionalized version of himself on the final episode of Garry Shandling's The Larry Sanders Show, making an impression by ripping deliberately into Shandling's character.

In 1999, Carrey won the role of comedian Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon. Several actors, including Edward Norton, were interested in the role, but Carrey's audition, including an act with the bongo drums Kaufman used in his performances, helped him be cast. Coincidentally, Carrey was born thirteen years to the day after Kaufman. Despite critical acclaim, he was not nominated for an Academy Award (though again, won a consecutive Best Actor Golden Globe award.)

In 2000, Carrey re-teamed with the Farrelly Brothers (who had directed him in Dumb & Dumber) in their comedy, Me, Myself and Irene, about a state trooper with multiple personalities who romances a woman played by Renée Zellweger. The film grossed $24 million dollars on its opening weekend and $90 million by the end of its domestic run. Carrey has since continued to appear in successful comedies as well as more dramatic roles. His performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) earned high praise from critics, who once again incorrectly predicted that Carrey would receive an Oscar nomination, although the film won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and co-star Kate Winslet received a nomination for her performance. (Again, Carrey was nominated for a Golden Globe for this performance, his sixth.)

In 2003, Carrey re-teamed with Tom Shadyac for the financially successful comedy Bruce Almighty. Earning over $242 million in the U.S. and over $484 million worldwide, this film became the second highest grossing live-action comedy of all time.

Carrey has stated that he finds the prospect of reprising a character to be less enticing than taking on a new role,[3] and fans say he rarely turns down roles because he enjoys trying new things.

    Personal life

Carrey has been married twice, first to Melissa Womer, with whom he has a daughter, Jane Erin Carrey (b. September 1987), then to Dumb & Dumber co-star Lauren Holly, in a marriage that lasted less than a year. Carrey dated actress Renée Zellweger, whom he met on the set of Me, Myself and Irene, although their relationship ended in December 2000. In 2006, Carrey began dating actress/model Jenny McCarthy.[4]

Jim really does have a chipped tooth; for his role in Dumb & Dumber, he simply removed the cap.[citation needed]

Jim Carrey is a fan of professional wrestling, with his favorite confirmed to be Kurt Angle, as at the Glamour Miramax Golden Globes Party (January 25, 2004), he appeared with a shaved head and told interviewers he shaved it to support Kurt Angle in the Royal Rumble that night.

Carrey owns a Gulfstream Aerospace Gulfstream V with tail number N162JC and also owns a Saleen S7 car (the car Bruce got after he became God in Bruce Almighty). He received a U.S. citizenship on October 7, 2004 and now has a dual citizenship between the U.S. and his native Canada. He went public about his bouts with depression in a November 2004 60 Minutes interview.

  • Ben Stiller-

Ben was born in New York on November 30, 1965. His parents, Jerry Stiller (George's father on Seinfeld]) and Anne Meara (Mrs. Sherwood in the Fame movie), were both actors and comedians and Ben and his sister Amy grew up surrounded by show business. In fact, Ben made his professional acting debut when he was only ten years old, appearing on his mother's show Kate McShane.

He knew he was going to follow in his parents' footsteps and headed off to study film at UCLA in 1983. Nine months later he was back in New York, having decided that being so immersed in the scene he didn't need to study it.

He landed a role in the Broadway revival of The House of Blue Leaves. While there, he shot a satirical documentary about fellow cast member John Mahoney (Frasier). The two teamed up again in the follow-up, a ten minute parody of The Color of Money. The producers of SNL got their hands on the tape and aired it on the show in 1987.

1987 also marked his feature debut in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. He also appeared that year in the TV adaptation of The House of Blue Leaves on PBS.

In 1989, Stiller spent a year on SNL, which he followed with an MTV comedy special called Back to Brooklyn. That gig landed him his own series on MTV but the show disappeared off that network and landed on FOX's network schedule in 1992. The show featured newcomers like Janeane Garofalo and Andy Dick. Still, even at the new network it failed to set fire to the ratings.

  • Adam Sandler-

Adam Richard Sandler (born September 9, 1966) is a Jewish-American actor, comedian, producer, and musician who was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire.

In the late 1980s, Sandler portrayed "Smitty" on The Cosby Show (1985-1989). He also was a performer for the MTV game show Remote Control, on which he made appearances as the characters "Trivia Delinquent" or "Stud Boy."

Sandler started performing in comedy clubs by spontaneously taking the stage at a club in Boston. He was then discovered by comedian Dennis Miller, who caught Sandler's act in Los Angeles. Miller immediately recommended him to Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels. Sandler was hired as a writer for "SNL" in 1990 and became a featured player the following year, quickly making a name for himself by performing amusing original songs on the show, including The Chanukah Song. He left the show in 1995 to focus on his acting career.

Sandler's first starring vehicle was the cult frat-boy classic Billy Madison, in which he plays a grown man repeating grades 1-12 to get his reluctant father's hotel empire. He followed this movie up with other surprisingly successful comedies such as Happy Gilmore (1996) and The Wedding Singer (1998). After The Waterboy (1998) Sandler reached box-office superstardom, where he has remained since.

Although generally despised by movie critics, audiences have remained faithful to Sandler's slapstick humor to the tune of $100-million-plus grossing movies. Sandler has moved outside the genre of goofball humor to take on more serious parts such as the critically acclaimed Punch-Drunk Love (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe), and Spanglish. At one point, Sandler was considered for the part that went to Jamie Foxx in Collateral (2004).

A celebrity comic who keeps a low profile, he rarely gives interviews and keeps his personal life private. Nonetheless, he sporadicly posts short video messages on his website (www.AdamSandler.com) on updates in his life he can afford to share with his fans. Sandler graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1991. On June 22, 2003, he wed model Jackie Titone, whom he'd met on the set of Big Daddy. Sandler and Titone worked together again in the Rob Schneider comedy Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, which Sandler executive-produced. He also has his own production company, Happy Madison, named from two of his most popular early films.

Since Chris Farley's death, in Adam Sandler's movies there is usually a reference to Farley.

Adam is one of Hollywood's perceived few members of the Republican Party and has performed at RNC functions.

  • Bill Murray-

    Biography

    Early life

Murray was born and raised in Wilmette, Illinois, the fifth of nine children of Edward J. Murray II, a lumber salesman, and Lucille Collins,[1] both Irish American Catholics. Three of Murray's siblings are also actors: John Murray, Joel Murray, and Brian Doyle-Murray. A sister, Nancy, is an Adrian Dominican Sister in Illinois. Murray graduated from Loyola Academy. He went to Regis University in Denver, Colorado before dropping out to pursue his comedy career.

    Early career

With an invitation from his older brother, Brian, Murray got his start at Second City Chicago studying under Del Close. The improvisational comedy troupe was a perfect fit for Murray's clever, dry humor and ad-libbing. While in Chicago, Murray worked at Little Caesar's alongside now-celebrity chef Kerry Simon. He eventually became a featured player on The National Lampoon Radio Hour, aired on some 600 stations between 1973 and 1975.

    Saturday Night Live

In 1975, he landed his first television role as a cast member of the ABC variety show Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell. That same season, another variety show titled NBC's Saturday Night premiered. Cosell's show lasted just one season.

Murray rose to prominence when he joined the cast of NBC's newly-titled Saturday Night Live the following season, replacing Chevy Chase. This was initially a turbulent experience for Murray. He often flubbed his lines and seemed awkward on camera. Chase had been the most popular cast member and some fans sent Murray hate mail stating he was a poor replacement. When Chase appeared as a guest host that season, they reportedly got into a fist fight backstage. But by the end of Murray's first season, he had begun to display his witty, laid-back persona. His characters, such as Nick the Lounge Singer and nerd Todd DiLamuca, became very popular with viewers. With the departure of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi in 1979, Murray became the most popular member of the ensemble cast. In 1980, the entire cast left the show.

John Cleese-John Cleese is about 195 cm tall, but was probably somewhat smaller at birth. Regs father was John Edwin Cheese, but when Reg joined the army 1915 he changed his last name to Cleese. One cannot help but wonder if the cheese-sketch was inspired by Johns grandfathers last name.
John is probably pleased that his father changed the last name since one of his best friends in the youth had the last name "Butter". Some useless fact is that in the 20s Reg Cleese was in India and lived in the same house as the brother to the author P.G. Wodehouse.
His first months John lived at the address Ellesmere Road 6. In school cricket was his favourite sport and he was captain for the school team. 1953 died his grandfather John Edwin Cheese, and the family moved to his house, East Shrubbery 2, next to the police station in Bristol. ("You must bring a ...shrubbery!").
When he was about 13 he started to organize jokes he liked, and write them down. His favourite radio show at that age was "The Goon Show". One of Johns teacher in history had difficulties pronouncing "r". (See the sketch about Pontius Pilatus in "Life of Brian" and you'll see what I mean)
When John Cleese started at Cambridge in October 1960 he decided to join the group "The Footlights Club", in the second term he got into the club.
In 1972 he formed the company Video Arts together with three friends. The company was doing business training videos, and this company made John Cleese his fortune. The company was sold in 1989 for 50 million british pounds, 7 of them got to Mr. Cleese. Even though he is not owning the company anymore, he is still working with them, since he likes the people there "As I get older, it seems even nicer to work with friends". For the 30 year anniversary he has done two videos "Messing Up A Meeting" and "Meeting Menaces" together with Video Arts (released in September 2002).
Nowadays Cleese rarely gives interviews, if he does, it is to plug some new movie or products. He is spending much time in America to be close to his daugther from his second marriage. He is now into his third marriage, being married to the American psychologist Alyce Faye Eichelberger.
Some more vital information, John Cleese got artwork by Po Shun Long. (How the hell do I know?! Simple; One of the old links from '94 was about that artist, unfortunatly that page has ceased to exist, but I thought the world should know that piece of information...I hope you feel enlightened.)
  1. Martin Lawrance-

Has signed on to the comedy, COLLEGE ROAD TRIP for Walt Disney Pictures. (March 17, 2007)
Says he misses marijuana but he knows better than to smoke a joint - because the drug really messes him up. (January 30, 2006)
Is being sued by a woman who says he hit her in the jaw at a party. (February 26, 2004)
After teaming with Will Smith BAD BOYS II, Lawrence is shifting gears for his next project by closing a deal to star in the family comedy RAGE CONTROL for DreamWorks Pictures. (July 24, 2003)
He's worked as a stand-up comedian, he's appeared on a TV series and in movies, but Lawrence said he's just beginning to understand the game and the talent he's been blessed with -- Depending on the script, he said he'd love to work with someone who could help him develop into a dramatic actor. (July 22, 2003)
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence had so much fun making their upcoming action flick BAD BOYS II they are already lobbying for a third installment. (June 21, 2003)
He said he's weeding out his bad-boy behavior. He was saying that he no longer smokes marijuana, which he blames for several widely-reported incidents of odd and dangerous behavior over the last few years.
Lawrence has made headlines for such incidents as ranting at drivers on a busy street while carrying a loaded gun, taking a loaded gun to the airport, getting into a nightclub brawl, and falling into a three-day coma after jogging on a 100-degree day while wearing layers of heavy clothing. He says that near-death experience three years ago inspired him to go straight.
  • Robin Williams-

    Biography

    Early life & education

Williams was born in Chicago. His father, Robert Fitzgerald Williams (1901-87), who was of English, Welsh and Irish descent, was a senior executive at Ford in charge of the Midwest area. His mother, Laurie, is a New Orleans-born former model of French descent.[2] He was raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and Marin County, California. While in California, Robin attended Redwood High School in Larkspur and grew up in the San Francisco suburb of Tiburon. In Michigan, he attended Detroit Country Day School, an exclusive college-preparatory school which boasts other famous alumni, including Steve Ballmer from Microsoft and Courtney Vance from Law and Order: Criminal Intent.

He has two half-brothers. He described himself as a quiet child whose first imitation was of his grandmother to his mom. He did not overcome his shyness until he became involved with his high school drama department[3]. In high school, he won a "Faisal" award for "Most Likely To Not Succeed" (17 November 2006 The View interview).

Every year, two thousand students audition for twenty places in the freshman class at Juilliard. Only two or three are accepted into the Advanced Program. Williams and Christopher Reeve were the only students accepted by John Houseman into the Advanced Program in 1973. Reeve and Williams had several classes together in which they were the only two students. In their dialects class, Williams had no trouble mastering all dialects naturally, whereas Reeve was more meticulous about it. Williams' manic comedy did not impress all of his teachers, but his dramatic performances impressed everyone. Williams and Reeve developed a close friendship, and they remained good friends for the remainder of Reeve's life. Williams visited Reeve after the horseback riding accident that paralyzed him from the neck down and cheered him up by arriving as an eccentric Russian doctor (similar to his role in Nine Months). Williams claimed that he was there to perform a colonoscopy. Reeve stated that he laughed for the first time since the accident and knew that life was going to be okay.[4]

    Early stand-up/TV career

Williams first achieved notice for his stand-up routines performing for tips and working clubs like the Purple Onion in San Francisco. After studying at Claremont McKenna College (then called Claremont Men's College) with the Strut and Fret theatre group in Claremont, California, and at Juilliard Drama School (where he befriended and roomed with actor Christopher Reeve). After appearing in the cast of the short lived Richard Pryor Show on NBC, he was cast by Garry Marshall as the alien Mork in a guest role in the TV series Happy Days.

As Mork, Williams improvised much of his dialogue and devised plenty of rapid-fire verbal and physical comedy, speaking in a high, nasal voice. Mork's appearance was so popular with viewers that it led to a spin-off hit television sitcom, Mork and Mindy, which ran from 1978 to 1982. Williams became an overnight sensation, and Mork was featured on posters, coloring books, lunchboxes, and other merchandise. His nonsensical catchphrases, including the greeting "nanoo nanoo" and the swear word "shazbot", were widely known.

Starting in the late 70s and throughout the '80s, Williams began to reach a wider audience with his standup comedy, including three HBO comedy specials, Off The Wall (1978), An Evening with Robin Williams (1982) and Robin Williams: Live at the Met (1986). His standup work has been a consistent thread through his career, as is seen by the success of his one-man show (and subsequent DVD) Robin Williams Live on Broadway (2002). He was voted as 13th on Comedy Central's list 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time.

After some encouragement from his friend Whoopi Goldberg, he was set to make a guest appearance in the 1991 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, "A Matter of Time", but he had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict; Matt Frewer took his place as time-traveling con man, Professor Berlingoff Rasmussen.

Williams also appeared on an episode of Whose Line is it Anyway? (Season 3, Episode 9: Nov. 16, 2000). During a game of "Scenes from a Hat," the scene "What Robin Williams is thinking right now" was drawn, and Williams stated "I have a career. What the hell am I doing?"
